The Mommy and Baby Update!
We had the 24 week appointment yesterday (well, I’m technically 25 weeks). For those who have been pregnant before or have significant others who have been pregnant, you may remember the joy that is the wonderful nasty orange drink for the gestational diabetes test pregnant women generally take at this point. For those who don’t know here’s a quick summary of the test (in case you don’t follow the link.):
“You’ll begin the glucose challenge test by drinking a syrupy glucose solution. One hour later, you’ll have a blood test to measure your blood sugar level. A blood sugar level below 130 to 140 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is usually considered normal on a glucose challenge test, although this may vary at specific clinics or labs. If your blood sugar level is higher than your clinic’s threshold, you’ll likely need a second test to confirm the diagnosis.”
The drink tastes like really sweet flat orange soda and isn’t something I’d recommend to anyone if they didn’t have to do it. Personally, I just hope I pass because taking the 3 hour test simply doesn’t sound appealing at all, not to mention the fact that I really don’t want gestational diabetes. My doc said that if I pass I’ll simply get a letter in the mail, and if I don’t they’ll call me. I haven’t received a phone call yet, so I’ll take that as a tentative good sign.
//UPDATE// Unfortunately, it seems I have failed the test so I have to go in for the 3 hour test. *cry* Add to that it looks like I’m slightly anemic too. Fun times… *sigh*
Other than that, everything else seems to be right on track. I’ve gained a total of 11 pounds so far, after having lost about 6 or so pounds during first trimester. The baby had a heartbeat of about 134, although he gave the nurse a hard time as he’s a very active little guy and wouldn’t sit still for the doppler. They keep asking me if I’m feeling the baby move and/or mentioning that it’s not unusual at this stage to not feel him every day. I’d like them to tell that to him! I think he’s preparing to be a soccer or kick boxing star. Overall, mama, baby and daddy are happy and healthyish (with the exception of daddy who has a bum leg).
Names
Before we found out the sex of the baby, we and most people we knew were sure it was going to be a girl, with the exception of two people. Due to this, I just *knew* we were going to have a boy, because when people are that sure of something Murphy’s Law is bound to step in. However, both Aaron and I went on our merry way, and only came up with girl names. (Elizabeth Irene was winning out over most.) Boy names seemed to elude us as we weren’t too excited about most of the boy names in the family. I mean, my father’s name was Ralph for crying out loud, and I’m entirely certain that if I even entertained the slightest notion of naming the boy after him that my father would fight his way from beyond the grave to haunt me for the rest of my natural life. So, we’ve been a bit stuck.
However, we’ve come up with a few choices that we’re leaning towards, and all of them have the name Alexander in them – we don’t know why, we just like the name Alexander. Therefore, I though I would share with all of you what we’re thinking (and thus opening myself and Aaron up to criticism, advice and cries of horror).
- Nicholas Alexander – We’re not entirely sure where the name Nicholas came from to us, but it’s a name we both like, although I think Aaron likes it a bit more than I do.
- Alexander Scott – This name has the benefit of being two family names. Nancy informed us that Alexander is a common name on her side of the family, and Scott happens to be Aaron’s middle name. The somewhat cool thing is that if we don’t hyphenate the last name, Aaron and the boy will have the same initials – ASH. How cool is that?
- Alexander Paul or Paul Alexander – Again, this has the benefit of both being family names. Paul happens to be my brat of an uncle. Why I’d want to name my child after him is a mystery in and of itself. HAHAHAHHA!!!
So there you have it. A mommy update and a baby name update. That’s all you’re getting from me now, as I have run out of things to say.

fwiw I’d go for Alexander Scott due to it’s Scottish overtures
of course that also means the initials will be ASH !
That sucks. You may want to ask about other flavers or unflavored. With Elijah the lady gave me plain and it wasn’t half bad except for being gross. With Emily they only had to orange and it was way worse.
Hmm ASH I guess those are OK initials. I really liked Henry when I was pregnant with Emily but thats not a choice. That would give you HAH or AHH though. I think AHH would be great initials.
