I have some posts planned about my breastfeeding experience, Alex’s fourth month checkup, and other things brewing in my brain. Tonight, however, I have some thoughts about baby clothes and diapers.
1. Buttons on the top of a onesie
While I was dressing Alex today, I noticed that the buttons on the top of his onesie were on his left side, and then I realized that all of his onesies with buttons at the top are on his left side. I wonder if this was a conscious choice, and what the reasoning behind it was. Is it because most people are right handed? Was some arbitrary decision by one company to do it that way, and all other companies followed suit? Or are there other brands that have the buttons on the other side?
2. Pockets
Why do baby clothes need pockets? Are babies carrying around tiny cell phones? Do they need places to put their cheerios? I’m surprised by how many of his clothes have pockets. I know that it’s just a design feature, but still…pockets?
3. Non-skid socks
Why does my infant need non-skid socks? Last I checked, Alex can’t even crawl, let alone walk around. It’s not as if there’s a ton of babies running around at 3 months old, needing the friction to keep them from skidding into things.
4. Diapers
I noticed that his diapers had cutsie little cartoon characters on them. The ones from Costco have animals like monkeys, kittens and kangaroos. Huggies has Disney characters. I think Pampers has Sesame Street characters. Wouldn’t it actually be better to market to the mothers and the fathers? It’s not as if the baby cares about the things he’s pooping into. It’s the parents who look at the things day in and day out. Putting car ads or advertising manicures might be more profitable. Or more fun, how about sayings. For newborns you could have, “Thank goodness he’s not on solids yet!” Or while potty training, “Don’t worry, she’ll be potty trained by the time she’s in college…hopefully.”
4a. Winnie the Pooh on Huggies newborn diapers
Who thought that one up, and did they realize the humor?
